Natural Disaster in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka (May 2017)

The recent natural disaster has severely affected many districts in Sri Lanka including the Ratnapura district. The flood situation in Ratnapura is still an ongoing issue with 9 of the 17 divisional secretariats in the Ratnapura district still remaining inaccessible and submerged in flood waters, with residents having limited access to basics such as food, water and essential supplies. At this stage, the nine such affected divisional secretariats include: Kalawana, Nivithigala, Elapattha, Kahawatte, Kuruvita, Pelmadulla, Ratnapura, Kiriella and the Ayagama divisional secretariats respectively.

The press has reported that the highest number of deaths occurred in the Ratnapura district (84 to date), approximately 150,000 people have been displaced, (37,500 families), houses have been damaged and destroyed, and diseases such as leptospirosis, dengue and diarrhoea are expected to spread, as is often seen in the aftermath of floods.

The Small and Medium Enterprise sector including other sectors have now been effectively destroyed with over 2,000 businesses estimated to be completely destroyed or having had suffered severe losses after the devastating floods and the landslides.

The Sabaragamuwa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) is saddened at this loss of human life, homes and businesses. The SCCI notes the scale and magnitude of the business losses experienced by the SMEs, and the efforts that will need to be made to re-establish these businesses as viable entities. The SCCI has in the past worked tirelessly to develop, sustain and grow business in all sectors, with special emphasis on the Small and Medium Enterprise sector. The SCCI notes the need to now start the slow and arduous process of recovery to help the businesses to rebuild.

The SCCI in its role as a leader in private enterprise for the Ratnapura district is now seeking to coordinate relief efforts on behalf of the business community. The SCCI is seeking your help and assistance to enable businesses to rebuild. Assistance of any kind is welcome, both financial and in-kind assistance, and the package of reforms can be worked out on a case by case basis.

Please contact the General Manager Mr. Ajith Ranasinghe to discuss any contributions that you would like to make on
